Athletics: Joe Newton Wins Again

CHAMPAIGN, IL - Joe Newton, author of "Coaching Cross Country Successfully," is the most successful high school cross country coach in the United States. This November he took his boys' cross country team from York High School in Elmhurst, Illinois, to an unprecedented 23rd Illinois High School Association (IHSA) state championship.

The win adds to Newton's impressive record that includes 19 national championships and 113 conference titles. Newton has created a running dynasty in his 48 years and has turned out countless champion runners in that time.

Newton has also earned a long list of coaching awards including, being named High School Cross Country Coach of the Year 16 times by the Northern Illinois Track Coaches Association and 15 times by the Illinois High School Coaches Association. In 1988, Newton was chosen as one of the coaches of the U.S. men's Olympic track and field team in Seoul, South Korea. He was the first high school coach ever to receive this honor.
