Triathlon: Welch Awarded Medal Of The Order Of Australia

Following in the foot steps of Simon Lessing who was awarded the title of Member of the British Empire in 2000, Mr. Gregory John Welch, will be awarded with Medal of the Order of Australia in a ceremony later this year. The announcement was made January 26th, Australia Day.

Mr. Welch, better known in the triathlon community as “Plucky”, was cited by the Council for the Order of Australia “for service to the sport of triathlon as an athlete, advisor, coach and commentator”.

The Order of Australia, created in 1975 to honor service to Australia or humanity, is community based award - anyone can nominate a fellow Australian for the award.

While it is technically incorrect to refer to Mr. Welch as “Sir Plucky”, he is responsive to this salutation.
