Posted: February 10, 2004 Athletics: Martin breaks U.S. Masters women’s 50-54 1500m record Kathryn Martin broke her own U.S. Masters women’s 50-54 record in the 1500m by running 4 minutes, 57.7 seconds at the Long Island Championships on Sunday in New York. Martin’s record was 5:02.28, set in 2003. Last year, she made a promise in a Nike ad campaign that she would break 5 minutes in the mile. The Northport, N.Y., resident was ranked as the #1 performer by Running Times Magazine for 2003 in the 50-54 age group and also was named the athlete of the year for cross country, road running and track & field by USATF for the second consecutive year.
