Organizers of the Anthen Bay Bridge, held last October in Virginia Beach, Va., announed yesterday that the race had been discontinued, citing a lack of resources to put on the event which took runners across the expansive Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.

"We were pleased to sponsor this one-of-a-kind race," said Brooke Taylor, vice president for community relations, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in a press release. "Events such as the Anthem Bay Bridge Marathon that promote healthy lifestyles are a good fit for our company. In two years, more than $25,000 was donated to the American Heart Association to support education and research in the Hampton Roads region."

The race was only held twice and had offered prize money. The 2003 winners were Mikhail Khobotov (2:26:52) and Victoria Zueva (2:45:51). Khobotov also won the race in 2002, setting the course record of 2:21:14. Leila Aman set the women's course record in 2002: 2:40:32.
