Some of the athlete ages entered into the timer's database were wrong. So, both Rich Byrne and Paul Aufdemberge were 39 years-old at race time, and were not second and third in the unofficial masters (40+) competition. The second over- 40 finisher after Eddy Hellebuyck was Mark Newman, 41, of Germantown, Tenn., who finished 65th in 2:32:41. He and Hellebuyck were the only masters finishers. Also, the finish places of Brian Sell (actually 13th in 2:17:20) and Fred Kieser (actually 14th in 2:17:21) were rerversed. Finally, Darrel General, 38, of Hyattsville, Md., finished his fifth U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon, a record. His best finish was 12th in 1996 (2:16:30). /RYAN LAMPPA/ NAIROBI, KEN (13-Feb). The story sent last week on the Kenyan National Cross Country Championships mistakenly said that Jane Gakunyi and Jane Kiptoo are the same athlete. This is incorrect. "They are completely different people," according to PIETER LANGERHORST. "Jane Kiptoo is from Keiyo district and Jane Gakunyi is from Kikuyu district." PRETORIA, RSA (31-Jan).
