Posted: March 14, 2004 Athletics: Second NCAA Record In Two Days For Kim Smith From David Monti (c) 2004 Race Results Weekly, all rights reserved RaceResultsWeekly.com University of Providence senior Kim Smith not only completed her successful 5000m/3000m double title on the final day of the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., today, but she shattered the NCAA indoor record for 3000m in the process. The New Zealander crushed the field, winning by 16 seconds in 8:49.18, well under PattiSue Plummer's 1983 record of 8:53.54 and below her own national record of 8:55.88 set on 22-Feb when she won the Big East Conference title in Syracuse. Sara Bei of Stanford (9:05.02) and Ida Nilsson of Northern Arizona (9:07.92) finished second and third, respectively. Smith closes her indoor season undefeated in six races.
