Posted: March 27, 2004 Athletics: Keflezighi Defends U.S. 8-K Title From David Monti (c) 2004 Race Results Weekly, all rights reserved RaceResultsWeekly.com NEW YORK (27-Mar) -- Mebrahtom Keflezighi, 28, of Mammoth Lakes, Calif., defended his U.S. 8-K title this morning in 22:16, the fastest time in the world this year. His performance broke the Central Park and championship record of 22:26 set in 2002 by Tim Broe. Finishing second was Anthony Famiglietti, 25, of Knoxville, Tenn., in 22:26, winning a tight battle with Bolota Asmerom, 25, of Oakland, Calif., who clocked 22:29. Keflezighi, who won his fourth straight national 15-K title two weeks ago and was runner-up at last month's U.S. Olympic Team Marathon Trials, took the lead for good in the fourth mile on the infamous Cat Hill. He covered the last 3,000 meters in 8:12. The race was run in cloudy weather with high humidity with temperatures in the 50s just after a morning rain. Ryan Kirkpatrick, 25, of Boulder, Colo., was fourth in 22:32, just one second ahead of Chad Johnson, also from Boulder. 25 men from the field of 42 finishers broke 24 minutes.
