Posted: March 31, 2004 Athletics: Manchester Road Race Makes Big Charity Donations From David Monti (c) 2004 Race Results Weekly, all rights reserved RaceResultsWeekly.com Manchester Road Race President Dave Prindiville announced yesterday that $119,000 in proceeds from the November 27, 2003 event will be donated to philanthropic causes. This marks the fifth straight year that race officials have been able to give $100,000 or more to charity. "Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, athletes, spectators, and volunteers, the Manchester Road Race is once again able to assist a number of worthwhile causes," Prindiville said. "This is another example of the tremendously positive impact which the event has on our community." More than 12,000 athletes registered for last year’s race, which was won on Thanksgiving Day by Kenyan Patrick Nthiwa in the time of 21:37. After race expenses are paid each year, the net proceeds from registration fees and other income is earmarked for charity. The Muscular Dystrophy Association led the list of charities supported with a $20,000 donation. Donations of $15,000 will be sent to the Manchester Area Conference of Churches and Habitat for Humanity. The Manchester Police Athletic League and Christmas in April will each receive checks for $10,000. The Manchester Road Race was held for the 67th time last year, making it one of the oldest in the United States. It combines a very competitive professional race with great fun for recreational runners trying to burn a few calories before they sit down to their traditional Thanksgiving meal. The 2004 edition of the race will be held on Thursday, November 25. Subscribe to Race Results Weekly: www.raceresultsweekly.com.
