Triathlon: Bonita Ironman New Zealand entries open

There’s no such thing as April Fool’s Day for anyone contemplating taking part in the 2005 Bonita Ironman New Zealand.

The world’s oldest international Ironman event opened for entries for the 2005 race today April 1, with the event set for Saturday 5 March 2005 in the superb destination of Taupo.

This year’s event attracted the first capacity field in its 20-year-history with 1425 entries and a final field of 1200. Organisers closed entries several weeks before the designated cut-off of January 9, and expect continued growth this year. Ironman New Zealand has more than doubled in size since the move from Auckland to Taupo six years ago.

It is the biggest international Ironman event with overseas competitors from 52 countries accounting for more than 60 per cent of the field.

"That’s one of the things that makes Ironman New Zealand such a special experience. Nearly all of the other qualifying races are basically domestic events, but Ironman New Zealand has a true international flavour with so many competitors from all around the globe,’’ Event Director Jane Patterson said.

"The main support comes from USA, Australia and Japan but we also have competitors from places like Ukraine and Saudi Arabia.

"Taupo is a superb location and the course is quite beautiful. New Zealand is a desired destination as well. Put all of those things together with an acknowledged well-run race, and you have a unique and enjoyable experience for internationals and New Zealanders alike.

"Ironman is becoming one of the must-do experiences for many New Zealanders. And not just for the athletes like Cameron Brown. This event is doable for everyone, especially for females who are choosing triathlon through the Special K women’s only series.’’

One was Napier’s Tracey Richardson who competed for the first time after taking up the sport less than two years ago. She also raised more than $120,000 for the event’s official charity, Cystic Fibrosis.

Last month’s 20th Anniversary event was won by New Zealanders Cameron Brown and Joanna Lawn – Brown for a record fourth consecutive time and Lawn for the second. Next year Brown has the opportunity to become the first person in the event’s history to win five Ironman New Zealand titles, and move ahead of the legendary Erin Baker.

Those entering the 2005 Bonita Ironman New Zealand will also be able to purchase a copy of the official Ironman New Zealand 20th Year book as a special discount price.

All details and entry forms available on www.ironman.co.nz.
