Athletics: Kamloops to Hold World Athletics Day May 8th & 9th 2004

The Kamloops Track & Field Club has been chosen to be the Canadian host for this year’s World Athletics Day. With strong support from BC Athletics, the Kamloops Track & Field Club presented an impressive proposal which included an opportunity for the young World Athletics Day participants to meet three national team members. Over nine local sponsors have agreed to support this event which is expected to draw close to 800 spectators over the two day meet.

Since 1996, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has used the first weekend in May to be World Athletics Day (WAD). The main objective of WAD is to promote and develop youth athletics on a worldwide basis. For this year’s event, those athletes born between 1987 and 1988 are eligible to take part. Participants receive t-shirts and other promotional gifts to help facilitate discussion of athletics and WAD. World Athletics Day helps to create an atmosphere that focuses on potential Olympians.

With World Athletics Day less than two months away, BC Athletics president Ron Smith predicts that the Boys Long Jump and 100m, and the Girls Triple Jump and 400m will provide the strongest levels of competition.
