Athletics: Nike's "Run Hit" Isn't A One Hit Wonder 2nd Annual Race Digs up New Bands and Expands for Record-Setting Run - April 25 LOS ANGELES - (April 7, 2004) - Nike has announced the bands for the second annual Run Hit Wonder 5K/10K road race, which provides fitness runners with a one-of-a-kind format featuring infamous "one-hit wonder" bands. For 2004, DEVO will headline the race with their hit single "Whip It." Joining them are A Flock of Seagulls with "I Ran," Tone-Loc and his "Wild Thing" and General Public with "Tenderness" on Sunday, April 25, 2004. "Last year's race was the largest inaugural 5K/10K in the Continental United States," said Jason Cohn, Nike's event manager. "The connection between music and competition struck a deep cord with participants in Los Angeles and based on the feedback we are receiving from the training runs, this year's race is going to be even bigger." Last year's inaugural race in Los Angeles quickly sold out with 10,000 runners. With an anticipated 20,000 runners for 2004, this year's start/finish was moved to the Los Angeles Coliseum. The popularity of the 2003 Run Hit Wonder race was fueled by Nike's Club Run LA community training runs, which allow runners (dubbed "Groupies") to train, socialize and test new Nike running shoes and apparel. Led by professional running coaches (dubbed "Roadies"), Groupies are treated to expert running advice, pace groups, food and beverages, all provided by Nike. For the Los Angeles race, Nike is hosting 12 training runs each week for the six weeks prior to the race. To add to the excitement at the training runs, all Groupies are entered to win prizes ranging from free Run Hit Wonder registration to new Nike gear. For more information, go to: www.nike.com.
