Two Oceans Marathon

By Riel Hauman

CAPE TOWN, RSA (10-Apr) -- Both defending champions, Mluleki Nobanda and Simona Staicu, were beaten despite being full of confidence beforehand that they could retain their titles at this 56 km ultramarathon. Rain throughout the 35th Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon made conditions unpleasant, but despite this winners Marco Mambo (ZIM) and Yelena Nurgalieva (RUS) ran the fourth and third fastest times in the history of the race. It was generally acknowledged that the quick times could be attributed mostly to the return to the traditional route over Chapman's Peak.

The Nurgalieva twins finished in the same positions they filled in last year's Comrades Marathon. Four Zimbabwian men finished in the first six.
