Athletics: Dyer named USATF Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS – Tonette Dyer has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after turning in a world-leading mark in the 200m Sunday at the Steve Scott Invitational in Irvine, Calif.

A San Diego State University senior, Dyer ran 22.34 seconds to win the 200m in the fastest time in the world this season. A native of Shreveport, La., Dyer also won the 100m in 11.29 seconds on Sunday to set a new SDSU school and Mountain West Conference record in both events.

Other world-leading performances turned in by American athletes over the weekend included BYU junior Kassi Andersen clocking 9 minutes, 48.74 seconds in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Cardinal Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., and 2000 Olympic gold medalist Stacy Dragila clearing 4.70meters/15 feet, 5 inches in the women’s pole vault at the UTEP Twilight meet in El Paso, Texas.

Collegiate records from the Cardinal Invitational over the weekend include University of Colorado sophomore Dathan Ritzenhein running 27:38.50 in his first ever men's 10,000 meters, and Stanford junior Alicia Craig established a national collegiate record in the 10,000 meter run with her time of 32:19.97.

Now in its fourth year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
