This week, Lew Friedland, retired as President. In 1990, Friedland assisted Dr. James P. Gills in the acquisition and purchase of the World Triathlon Corporation. Since then, he has been a member of the Board of Directors and served as Vice President of WTC until his promotion to President in 1998. Throughout his tenure, Friedland has attended more than a dozen Ironman Triathlon World Championship races in Hawaii. After celebrating Ironman’s successful 25th anniversary, Friedland expressed interest in significantly reducing his role and amount of travel. “The past six years have been an incredible ride, but I feel it is time to “pass the baton.’ My passion for Ironman remains strong and I am excited about the company’s next phase of growth and leadership,” says Friedland. Ben Fertic, currently Vice President of Information Systems will succeed Friedland. Fertic, an Ironman finisher, joined Ironman in 2000 and has been heavily involved in the business operations and day-to-day decision making for WTC. Fertic’s creativity and strategic vision have helped bring Ironman’s online presence and its races to a new level. “Ironman is a great passion of mine and I have enjoyed the last four years working to bring the Ironman experience and dream to the world. I am honored to have the support of such a great team and I will strive to continue the pursuit of excellence for the Ironman brand and our athletes,” says Fertic. Dr. Pit Gills, a member of the Board of Directors and a representative of the Gills Family says, “Our family can’t thank Lew enough for his dedication to Ironman throughout the last six years. We are very excited about Ben’s new role, as we believe he demonstrates a vision and breadth of knowledge that will lead Ironman to even more success in the years ahead.”
