Posted: May 21, 2004 Athletics: Italy Announces Olympic Marathon Squad From David Monti (c) 2004 Race Results Weekly, all rights reserved RaceResultsWeekly.com By Bob Ramsak Veterns Stefano Baldini and Ornella Ferrara lead the Italian marathon squads for August's Olympic Games, FIDAL, the Italian federation announced Thursday. Baldini, fourth at this year's Flora London Marathon was pre-selected, along with Daniele Caimmi. Alberico Di Cecco, runner-up at the Turin Marathon on April 18 in 2:09:29, got the nod for the third spot. In his only marathon this year, Caimmi did not finish at last month's Boston Marathon. The 35-year-old Ferrara, the 1995 world championships bronze medalist, ran a personal best 2:27:49 to win the Rome Marathon in late March. Third in both the Venice and Berlin Marathons last fall, she also won the Maratona del Mare in Genoa on February 22, reportedly as a training run. Bruna Genovese, second to Ferrara in Rome in 2:29:03, was named to team as well, along with Rosaria Console, who upset Lidia Simon at last weekend's Vienna City Marathon, clocking 2:29:22 in windy conditions. Console also competed in Rome last March, finishing third. She was forced to run the race in Vienna just 49 days later in order to ensure Olympic selection.
