Posted: May 21, 2004 Athletics: United States Track Coaches Association Team Power Rankings Brigham Young University and UCLA currently hold the Division I top spots in the United States Track Coaches Association Team Power Rankings. BYU is the top ranked men’s team in the nation this week (413.17 points) after claiming the Mountain West Conference Championship title for the fourth time in the last five years. The University of Minnesota is currently ranked second (410.64) after their seventh place ranking last week. The University of Florida ranks third (410.14) as the Gators took second overall at the SEC Outdoor Championships. The top ten includes Nebraska (4th, 409.94), Wisconsin (5th, 407.56), Tennessee (6th, 402.90), Arizona State (7th, 399.89), Georgia (8th, 389.28), Clemson (9th, 389.03) and Indiana (10th, 387.15). UCLA takes the top women’s spot again this week (460.87 points) with many impressive individual performances in winning the Pac-10 women’s conference title. The University of Nebraska is second (422.93) with BYU ranked third (420.02). The top ten includes Georgia (4th, 414.50), South Carolina (5th, 404.61), Florida State (6th, 395.68), North Carolina (7th, 392.64), Rice (8th, 389.26), Arizona State (9th, 385.28) and Washington (10th, 382.6). The Team Power Ranking is a unique system of ranking teams on the basis of quality of athletic performance, team depth, and dual meet scoring potential. Points are assigned for two athletes in each event contested in a dual meet, and also earned based on the quality of each performance.
