Triathlon: Top Pros Head Field For 5430 Triathlon

Monica Caplan & Gordo Byrn To Compete for $10,000 Prize Purse

Boulder, CO - May 26, 2004. Boulder, Colorado's 5430 Triathlon has attracted two of the elite stars of the sport. Gordo Byrn of New Zealand was 4th at this year's Ironman New Zealand, and 3rd at the 2003 Ironman Canada. His time was 8:46 in both races. Monica Caplan of Boulder, training under the guidance of Dave Scott, has numerous impressive finishes in long course triathlons including winning the 2003 Half Vineman Triathlon and 3rd at this year's Ralph's Half Ironman California. Both are excited about the event and the prize money. "It's great to see the 5430 offer a strong prize purse not only for the professionals but, also, for the age groupers. They are truly what make this sport," says Caplan.

A prize purse of over $10,000 will be awarded to professionals and age group competitors. The top finishing professional male and female will each receive $2,500 cash; while the top age group finishers will receive $500 gift certificates, courtesy of Fleet Feet Sports and Boulder Running Company. In addition, all age group winners in each 5-year category will receive a pair of Pearl Izumi running shoes. Gift certificate and product prizes will also be given to the top three triathlon relay teams and top duathlon finishers.

The 5430 Triathlon & Duathlon, now in its 4th year, is expected to attract 600 competitors to the event on July 18. The Triathlon consists of a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, and a 13.1 mile run, and can be done solo or as part of a 2,3, or 4 person relay team. The Duathlon is a 6.5 mile run, 56 mile bike, and another 6.5 mile run, and is strictly a solo event.
