Athletics: Bekele Shatters 5000M World Record In Hengelo

Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia shattered the world record in the 5000m, running 12:37.35 this evening at the Thales FBK Games in Hengelo, Netherlands. The previous record of 12:39.36 was set by Haile Gebrselassie in 1998. Gebrselassie is entered in the 10,000m, the final event of the meet.

Alan Webb of the USA was fourth in the men's 1550m in a time of 3:33.7.

In the women's 1500m Canada's Carmen Douma won in a personal best 4:04.85.
