Athletics: Canadians win 10 medals and achieve three Olympic standards over weekend

June 10, 2004 Ottawa, ON - Canadian athletes across the globe garnered medal winning performances at various meets over the past week. At the Seville Grand Prix, defending indoor and outdoor world champion Perdita Felicien of Pickering, ON finished second in the 100m hurdles with a time of 12.73 seconds. Angela Whyte of Edmonton, AB was eighth in a time of 13.12 seconds. Also in Seville, Jason Tunks of London, ON finished eighth in the discus with a toss of 62.26m.

In Turin, Italy Shane Niemi of Kamloops, BC matched his best time from 2003 in winning the 400m. Niemi clocked 45.46 in the victory.

In Poland, Achraf Tadili of Montreal, QC achieved the Olympic “A” standard with a victory in the 800m. Tadili’s time of 1:45.21 was also a season best time. Four days later at the Spitsen Leichtathletik Luzern Meet, Tadili attained his second European victory, as well as the Olympic “B” standard. Tadili’s was clocked at 1:46.30.

Canada’s other medals came from the Oregon Track Classic. In the men’s 1500m, Kevin Sullivan of Brantford, ON achieved the Olympic “A” standard, in finishing second with a time of 3:35.93. Diane Cummins of Victoria, BC won silver in a time of 1:59.38. Two other Canadians were also in the race, Aimee Teteris of Toronto, ON was fifth and Heather Henniger of Halifax, NS was eighth.

In the field, Mark Boswell of Brampton, ON earned a bronze medal in the high jump with a jump of 2.24m. The event was won by James Nieto of USA with a jump of 2.27m. In the shot put, Brad Snyder of Windsor, ON finished fifth behind a group of Americans with a toss of 20.04m. Pole vaulters Stephanie McCann of Surrey, BC and Dana Ellis of Kitchener, ON finished fourth and fifth with jumps of 4.30m.

On Tuesday, Felicien and Whyte hit the track in Ostrava, Czech Republic at the Golden Spike Meet. Felicien earned her second medal in four days with a gold medal performance. She crossed the line with a time of 12.67, just off her seasonal best of 12.60. Whyte claimed the bronze medal with a time of 12.96. Carman Douma-Hussar of Cambridge, ON achieved the Olympic “B” standard with her fifth place finish in the 1500m. Douma-Hussar’s time was 4:06.28.
