Triathlon: Triathlon Canada Launches New Race Series!

Triathlon Canada is pleased to announce the developmental phase of a new race series for “women only”! In its inaugural year, this series links eight exciting races taking place from Atlantic Canada to British Columbia through the summer of 2004. Following evaluation and a successful positioning of national sponsors, the formal launch is planned for 2005.

Many of those who are already immersed in the sport may question the need for such races. Canada is, after all, fortunate to have almost equal participation of male and female competitors. However, the number of participants in “women only” races clearly supports the need and desire for such races. The “grandma” of the races, which has been run for 10 years in Milton, Ontario, attracted 829 women of all ages in 2003, and we expect 4,000 women to enjoy our race series in 2004! Triathlon Canada and its partners view this series as a premier opportunity to further promote this growing involvement of girls and women in the sport of triathlon, and anticipate more races to be added next year.

With a focus on grassroots involvement and community participation, each race will include a variety of additional activities - coaching clinics, kids races, multiple distances - and a unique feature will be a financial contribution to a local charity on behalf of each race. Everyone is a winner!

The 2004 series of races is as follows:

May 8 - Saskatoon, SK
June 12 - Saint John (Hampton), NB
July 17 - Kincardine, ON
July 18 - Orangeville, ON
August 2 - Vancouver, BC
August 15 - Grimsby, ON
August 22 - Strathmore, AB
September 5 - Milton, ON
