NEW YORK (12-Jun) - U.S. marathon record holder Deena Kastor set a personal best time and ran the fastest U.S. 10-K time ever in Central Park here today, prevailing easily in the 33rd running of the Circle of Friends New York Mini 10-K. Kastor, 31, of Mammoth Lakes, Calif., completed the one loop of the park in 31:44, totally dominating the race after breaking free from Colleen De Reuck, Kate O'Neill and Jen Rhines in the second mile. She earned $10,000 for her victory plus a $1,000 bonus for breaking 32 minutes. The fastest-ever time at the Mini by an American had been 31:52 by Anne Marie Letko in 1994. O'Neill, 23, of New Haven, Conn., also set a personal best, finishing second in 32:38, while Rhines, 29, of Ardmore, Pa., finished third in 32:44. De Reuck, the forty year-old from Boulder,Colo., who won the U.S. Olympic Trials - Women's Marathon last February, smashed the U.S. masters record by more than half a minute, finishing fourth in 32:50. Carmen Troncoso, 45 of Austin, Tex., set a U.S. masters record for women 45 to 49, finishing 14th in 35:30. Over 4000 women entered the race, which was held in sunny, warm and nearly windless conditions.
