Posted: July 3, 2004 Triathlon: Ireland Wins 3 Bronze Medal at Age-Group Worlds European Age-Group Triathlon Championships, Lausanne, Switzerland (1500m Swim, 40K Cycle, 10K Run) Triathlon Ireland sent a team of 5 to the European Age-group Championships and come home with 3 bronze medals.
Anna Frankland, 26, from Dublin was 3rd home in the highly competitve 25-29 category. Anna is currently leading the National Triathlon Series at home after a win in Derry, a second place in Galway and a second place in the Irish Championships in Kilkee last week. Speaking from Lausanne today, just before the presentation cermony Anna said she was "delighted with her finish. It was a tough and long race, but was happy that her recent racing and training has paid off". She was feeling ill for the last few days and was considering pulling out of this race but is glad now she didn't. The three pictures attached are of Anna in recent races. Frances Buckley of Ballincollig, Cork and a long time member of Cork Tri Club was the second Irish girl home, winning bronze in her 40-44 category, a great acheivement. Marie Casey-Breen of Murrintown, Wexford and a member of the Carrick-on-Suir Tri Club was the third girl home and also in 3rd position in her 50-54 category. Marie recently won the 3 day IronWoman race in Belfast. These 3 European medals can be added to the Bronze medal Trevor Woods brought home from the World Champs in Madeira last May. Its a sure sign that as a country we are improving and can hold our heads high on the world stage. Triathlon is the fastest growing sport in Ireland at the moment, we are holding more races than ever (45 this year alone), we have more people entering these races (350 in Kilkee last week) and we have more and more athletes competing at an international level.
