Triathlon: Woegerer and Hogan Top Juniors at Welland

Thirty one juniors hit the water today in exciting sprint distance action at the second National KOS® Junior Series event. In the women’s event, Danielle Dixon (Guelph) exited the water first followed by Ashley Eykens (London) and Catherine Hogan (Bedford). Hogan took over the lead on the bike and finished with a strong run to claim first in 1:06:51 followed by Eykens in 1:08:20 and Dixon in 1:09:38. Guillaume Valiéres-Larocque (Prévost) led the men’s swim ahead of Andrew Woegerer (Palgrave) and Kevin Bowles (Courtice). Valiéres-Laroucque, Bowles and Woegener completed the bike together, but Woegener used a stong run to win in 1:00:31. Hugo Descoteaux-Simard (La Baie) roared through the field with a 15:44 run split to claim second in 1:01:33 while Valéires-Larocque edged out Bowles on the run in to take third in 1:01:54. Complete results are available at: www.multisportcanada.com.

The series moves to Edmonton on July 11th for the third race which is also the first annual ITU PATCO (Pan American) Junior Championship. Over 60 junior athletes from 14 countries are currently registered in what promises to be an exciting event on the world class Edmonton course. The fourth event will be the Junior National Championship in Caledon on July 31st. Caledon will also host the first Canada/USA Junior Challenge. The final two events are Drummondville (August 15th) and Kelowna (August 21st).

Current series rankings after two events are summarized below. Athletes must compete in at least three events to qualify for overall series awards and rankings are based on the top three results for each athlete. Points at Junior Nationals will be increased 50%. Points are also being tracked for youth 14/15 races held in conjunction with the series. However, since participation is more regional, overall series awards have not been established for the youth category this year.
