Triathlon: Midweek Results and Upcoming Races in Ireland

Race 4 out of 5 in the Dublin City Duathlon Series was held in a sun drenched Phoenix Park on Wednesday evening.

78 athletes turned out to compete in the 2 mile Run, 10 mile Cycle and 2 mile Run around closed roads in the Park.

From the gun Brian Crinion, who recently returned from the World Duathlon Championships in Belgium, took the lead with a very fast start, trying to shake off some of the slower runners. But Gary Crossan, Letterkenny, who is more used to running the marathon as an Irish International quickly reeled Brian in and led the rest of the run at his own pace. Gary got out on the first bike circuit about 30 seconds ahead of Brian, with Liam Dunne (a promising young triathlete from Rathfarnham) close behind.

Brian caught Gary on the first lap out 5 and kept the blistering pace of about 26mph going on the bike. He finished the bike section well ahead of Gary but with Garys pace we expected it to be a close finish but Brian managed to keep out in front and finished in 39mins and 16 secs, 53 secs ahead of Gary, with his clubmate Liam Dunne another 48 secs behind. The womens race was just as exciting as the mens, with all the main contenders close together on the run. On the bike leg, Jenny Fay from Sandymount (on her shiny new bike) edged ahead of Loraine Creane and Elena Mastova. Elena, a former Olympic Biathlete had two near misses when a family of deer ran into her on the bike, not once but twice but it didn't affect her performance too much. On the run, herself and her clubmate Loraine had a very close battle, being only a few seconds apart around the course. They both caught and passed Jenny who tired on the second run. Lorainne won out by 6 seconds with a sprint at the finish.
