Athletics: Sorenson, Carlucci Capture Fleet Feet Davis Mile

DAVIS, Calif. - (July 11, 2004) - Jim Sorenson and Maurica Carlucci broke away from tight packs in the last 100 meters to capture the Open titles at the 9th Fleet Feet Davis Mile. The race was the one mile championships of the Pacific Association of USA Track & Field. A $2,500 purse was awarded to top Association runners and teams.

Sorenson, 37, of San Leandro, pulled into the lead in the last 100 yards to defend his title, running 4:13.52. Andy Powell, 24, of Palo Alto finished second in 4:14.17 with Antonio Arce, 27, of Folsom third in 4:15.79.

Carlucci, 24, of Mountain View broke clear of Heather Tanner in the final blocks to capture the women's title, 4:57.14 to 4:59.13. Becca Doane of Walnut Creek finshed third in 5:03.61.

More than 400 runners enjoyed ideal running conditions on the two-lap course in downtown Davis.

Myra Rhodes, 71, of Sacramento set a new age group record in 7:02.68, lowering her record of 7:05.62 set last year. Other top age division times included Heidi Helvestine, 51, who won the women's 50-54 division by almost 25 seconds in 5:35.81 and in the 60-64 division, Shirley Matson, 63, ran 6:07.01 to beat Melody Ann Schultz, 62, 6:15.69. Eve Pell, 67, captured the 65-69 division by 70 seconds in 6:55.30.
