Posted: July 14, 2004 Triathlon: Canada announced today the members of its 2004 Olympic Triathlon Team 2004-07-13 -- Toronto, CAN The team will be led by 2000 Olympic and 2002 Commonwealth Games Champion, Simon Whitfield, of Victoria, BC. Whitfield won the 2004 Mazatlan World Cup and is one of the key contenders for the top of the podium in Athens. Whitfield will have a teammate this year in Brent McMahon, also from Victoria, BC. McMahon is a former World Junior Championships medalist and four (4) time Canadian Junior Champion. Jill Savege, of Penticton, BC, currently 4th ranked in the World, will lead the women’s team. Savege, who won the 2003 Pan American Games gold medal, will be looking to add an Olympic medal to her collection. Joining Savege, will be Commonwealth Games gold medalist, Carol Montgomery, of Vancouver, BC. Montgomery, a three time World Championship medalist and 2000 Olympic Team member, will be looking to regain the form that made her a legitimate medal contender in Sydney, only to have her dreams coming crashing down….literally…in a serious bike accident. The final member of the women’s team will be Samantha McGlone, a three (3) time Canadian Junior National Team member. McGlone, a rising star on the World Cup circuit, nabbed the final woman’s spot at the 2004 Edmonton World Cup on July 12. Former Pan Am Gold medalist and 2000 Olympic team member, Sharon Donnelly, of Kingston, ON, will be alternate for the women’s team. Head coach of the team will be Lance Watson from Victoria, BC. Paul Regensburg, also of Victoria, BC will act as Team Leader. The women’s Olympic Triathlon is scheduled for August 25th with the men’s event following on August 26th. |
