Posted: July 21, 2004 Triathlon: Series of fundraisers for local cancer patient being held at Ironman USA Lake Placid LAKE PLACID, N.Y.-Ironman North America and the Kevin Broderick family have combined forces to host a series of fundraisers, which will be held in conjunction with the sixth annual Ironman USA Lake Placid to help a local cancer victim cover some of the costs associated with his treatment. Kevin Broderick, a long-time Lake Placid resident, local teacher and hockey coach at National Sports Academy (NSA) was diagnosed earlier this year with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a very rare form of bone cancer. Broderick is currently in New York City receiving treatment and Ironman and the Broderick family will be hosting a series of fundraisers throughout Ironman week to help offset some of the cost that Broderick faces in his battle with cancer. Broderick was a volunteer at Ironman USA Lake Placid for the past five years. The Broderick family will have a booth at the Downtown Ironman Athlete Village beginning on Thursday, July 22, which will include information on the Kevin Broderick Ewing’s Sarcoma Fund as well as a 50-50 raffle. The raffle will be $2 per ticket, $5 for three tickets and $10 for eight tickets. The raffle drawing will be held at 10 p.m. on Sunday, July 25 (race day). The Timex Ironkids Splash and Dash will take place on Friday, July 23 at 2 p.m. beginning at Mirror Lake Beach. Entry for the event will be $5 with all proceeds going to the Kevin Broderick Ewing’s Sarcoma Fund. All kids who compete will receive a Timex Ironkids T-Shirt as well as a medal, and the finish line will be located at the official Ironman finish line in the Olympic Speed skating Oval. As part of a continuing tradition at Ironman USA Lake Placid, the U.S. Postal Service and Ironman will auction off an autographed Lance Armstrong poster signed after Armstrong’s fifth straight Tour de France victory last July. The auction will take place on Monday, July 26 at the Ironman USA Lake Placid Awards Banquet and all proceeds will benefit the Kevin Broderick Ewing’s Sarcoma Foundation. The yearly auction has highlighted the U.S. Postal Services continued support of Cancer patients and Cancer research. In 2003 a similar Armstrong autographed poster was auctioned off for $2,000 at the Ironman USA Lake Placid Awards Banquet. And to wrap things up, Ironman USA Lake Placid and the Whiteface Lodge will auction off a package for the 2005 Ironman USA Lake Placid triathlon. The package will include a race entry for 2005; accommodation for the event as well as two VIP passes for the 2005 event. The Whiteface Lodge will serve as the official Ironman USA Lake Placid Race Hotel in 2005 and donated the accommodation for the auction. The auction for both the print and the race package will take place at the 2004 Ironman USA Lake Placid awards banquet and the package is valued at roughly $2,000. The goal for the fundraisers is to raise more than $5,000 to help Broderick offset some of the substantial costs of travel and cancer treatment. “Obviously this is a great opportunity for those in the community to help Kevin in his time of need for him and his family during this trying time,” said Ironman North America President Graham Fraser. Donations to the Kevin Broderick Ewing’s Sarcoma Fund will also be accepted. For more information, or to donate call Tom Broderick at 518-523-1446 or e-mail brodyt@northwoodschool.com.
