Posted: July 27, 2004 Athletics: Phillips named USATF Athlete of the Week INDIANAPOLIS – Dwight Phillips has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning the men’s long jump Sunday at the 2004 Norwich Union International in Birmingham, England. The reigning world indoor and outdoor men's long jump champion, Phillips set a stadium record with his winning leap of 8.35 meters/27-4.75. He currently owns the five best jumps in the world this season with a best of 8.44m/27-8.25 on May 25 in Mexico City. Earlier this month in Sacramento, Phillips won the 2004 Olympic Trials with a leap of 8.28m/27-2. Also at Birmingham, Erin Gilreath won the women's hammer throw with a toss of 69.97m/229-6, after winning at the 2004 Olympic Trials with a throw of 70.42m/231-0. Gilreath owns the top four marks on the U.S. women's hammer throw list this year. Another impressive performance was turned in by men’s 110m hurdlers Allen Johnson, Terrence Trammell and Ron Bramlett, who swept that event Friday at the at the 2004 Meeting Gaz de France Paris Saint-Denis in France. A four-time world outdoor champion and the 1996 Olympic gold medalist, Johnson dominated the race in posting the third fastest time in the world this season with his win in 13.07 seconds. Trammell, the 2000 Olympic silver medalist and 2004 Olympic Trials winner, was second in 13.37 and Bramlett grabbed third in 13.46. Now in its fourth year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website.
