Posted: July 30, 2004 Triathlon: Popular Canadian Triathlete Remains In A Coma Sean Marlowe, an up and coming 21-year-old triathlete from Victoria, remains in a coma in the University of Alberta Hospital, Edmonton. He was seriously injured in a car accident on July 9th, when the car he was driving collided with a tractor-trailer. Although he survived the initial surgery in which he lost a lung, he has remained in a coma with undetermined brain injuries. His mother and sister currently living in New Zealand, his father from Vancouver, and brother from Victoria have traveled to Edmonton and remain at his bedside. Sean was born in Vancouver, and except for 2 years in West Vancouver, was raised in Delta. He graduated in 2000 from Seaquam Secondary School. He has resided and trained in Victoria for the last 4 years. Marlowe is a training partner of Simon Whitfield and Brent McMahon, both of whom will represent Canada at the 2004 Athens Summer Olympic Games in August. His accident has been devastating to them, as well as all the athletes and coaches at the PacificSport National Triathlon Centre and the community at large. Friends from school and his swim club days are also reeling at the news. Sean, also known as "Slim," is famous for his sense of humour, and perennially positive outlook on life. His ability to lighten a grumpy mood at an early morning swim practice, his way with people, and goof ball antics are legendary. All who know him or have simply heard of him want to help support Sean and his family in this very difficult time. To this end, a Trust Fund has been started in his name. Donations can be made at any branch of the Bank of Montreal in the Greater Victoria area, or mailed to/dropped off at the PacificSport Victoria office. The address for PacificSport Victoria is: c/o PacificSport Canadian Sport Centre Victoria, Suite 100, 4636 Elk Lake Dr. Victoria, B.C. V8Z 5M1. Cheques are to be made out to "Sean Marlowe Fund " The fund will remain open until September 30th, 2004. Donations are not tax deductible. For news on Sean and further information on the Trust Fund, please go to www.nttc.ca, a link on the home page of the PacificSport National Triathlon Centre website. Here you will also find updates on his condition, a photo gallery and testimonials from Olympian Simon Whitfield and others. Links to this website can also be found at the Commonwealth Triathlon Club, and PacificSport Canadian Sport Centre Victoria websites. Comment on this story. |
