Adventure Racing World Championship - Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Canada

Adventure Racing World Championship Course Revealed

The course for the 2004 Adventure Racing World Championship was revealed last night to the forty-three international adventure racing teams gathered in Corner Brook. The teams are now focused on preparing the most efficient and effective route around the course to reach the finish line and claim the title of Adventure Racing World Champions.

Set in the remote wilderness of South Western Newfoundland the details were revealed by course designer Lawrence Foster. Using an audio visual presentation he directed teams through the challenges that lie ahead of them. Their journey will start at 8 am tomorrow at the Sandbank Provincial Park in the isolated southern town of Burgeo. Teams will have 144 hours to complete the course, visiting all 21 check points before the finish line at Marble Mountain.

The course will cover some of Newfoundland's most remote woodland, stunning coast lines and southern fjords. Competitors will experience a challenging ascent to the top of the Blow Me Down Mountain, where true to its name teams may encounter the famous Newfoundland winds. The rappel off the mountain will offer a stunning panoramic view across the Bay of Islands. Other highlights during the athletes' adventures, includes: kayaking passed abandoned picturesque fishing villages, an 80km rail trail ride and a 16km Dory row (with bikes and team members) across the potentially 'rough' Flat Bay.

Last minute preparations are now underway; gear bins are being packed, bikes stored in travelling boxes and the maps studied one last time. Teams will grab their last few hours of sleep before boarding buses at 4am for the 3 hour journey to the south coast start line.
