Posted: August 6, 2004 Adventure Racing: Teams continue to cross finish line in Adventure Racing World Championship Adventure Racing World Championship 2004 - Corner Brook, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada August 6: The race may be won but the teams will continue to cross the finish line in the Adventure Racing World Championship 2004 over the next 14 hours. At the end of day 6, nine ranked teams remain on the course. The local Newfoundland & Labrador team crossed the line today at 14:20 to a warm welcome from Newfie supporters who have loyally followed them around the course. The team was delighted to be the 18th team overall and 4th Canadian team to cross the line (official positions still to be announced due to time credits). The beaming smiles and cheers from the crowd reflected the kindness and generosity the local Newfoundlanders have offered since the start of the race. They provided warm food at check points, cheers of encouragement and friendly conversation - night and day. Not just to the teams but also to volunteers manning the check points. The Newfoundland team slept in beds at three different homes around the course, had home cooked meals, one lady even offered to do their laundry. Team member Bill Wells reported that he had “slept more this week than he does during a tough week at work, we have probably clocked in about 17 hours sleep during the race. We woke up each morning feeling as if we were starting a new race!” The Brazilian Salomon Mitsubishi QuasarLontra, who were concerned the hot summer conditions in Corner Brook would be too cold for them, crossed the line at 09:52 this morning. Captain Fabrizio Giovannini commented that their team name Lontra is South American for Beaver, “we are like the fast and cunning animal, and now I have finally seen one in the wilderness and not just in the cartoons. I was excited.” In the early hours of the morning Team Spirit (Can) crossed the line at 04:22 followed by Team North Face (UK) at 05:19. Sierra International (NZ) arrived at 06:11. Teams continue to arrive at the finish line at Marble Mountain this evening and overnight with the final team expected to finish early tomorrow (Saturday). The course closes at 8am tomorrow. The race can be followed on www.arworldchampionship.com and also on www.sleepmonsters.com. Background information
