Athletics: Sisley adds fourth record in the javelin at USA Masters

DECATUR - Becky Sisley added her fourth record in the javelin throw on day 2 at the USA Masters Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois.

Sisley of Eugene, Ore., threw 31.48 meters/103 feet, 3 inches to win the W65 age group and to add her name to another age group record. The 65-year-old bettered the 29.89m/98-0 set in 2001 by Erika Messner of Florida. Sisley owns the javelin throw records in the W50-36.14m/118-7, W55-34.82m/114-3, W60-32.45m/106-5 respectively.

Roderick Parker of Amity, Ark., set a world M85 record in the 400m after clocking 1:24.18. The 85-year-old Parker bettered the previous record of 1:30.99 set in 2001 by Herbert Liedtke of Sweden.

Robert Youngs of Enfield, Conn., set an M70 record to win his age group in men's the javelin throw. The 70-year-old threw 42.17m/138-4 to better the previous record 40.54m/133-0 set in 2001 by Larry Horine of Boone, N.C.

Jack Bray of Greenbrae, Calif., set a M70 record in the 5,000m race walk after his 27:35.90 finish. The 71-year-old Bray bettered the 28:57.77 set by Alfred DuBois of West Allis, Wisc.

Melvin Larsen leaped to a M80 record in the long jump with a mark of 4.19m/13-9. The 80-year-old from Iowa bettered the 3.89m/12-9 set in 2000 by Milton Silverstein of Arizona. Larsen also won the M80 age group of the 80m hurdles in 14.38w. Audry Lary leaped 3.84m/12-7.25 to set a W70 record in the women's long jump. The 70-year-old Frederick, Md., resident bettered the 3.48m/11-5 set in 1998 by Leonore McDaniels of Virginia.

Courtland Gray of Irving, Texas set a world M60 record in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.62. The 60-year-old Gray bettered the 14.74 set in 1998 by American Charles Miller. Both Barbara Jordan and Flo Meiler of Vermont set records in the 80m hurdle finals. The 68-year-old Jordan ran 16.83 seconds to improve the W65 record of 17.07 she set in 2001. The 70-year-old Meiler ran 17.57 to better the previous W70 record of 20.08 set by Johnnye Valien of Los Angeles, Calif.

Jim Selby of Fallbrook, Calif., ran 10:09.79 to set a M75 record in the 2,000m steeplechase. The 76-year-old Selby bettered the 10:40.02 set in 2000 by Avery Bryant of California.

All-American Robert Thomas, Jr. ran 49.21 to win the M35 age group. Thomas, Jr. of Indianapolis, Ind., ran the fastest time by anyone in the 400m finals. Olympian Sunder Nix won the M40 age group in a time of 50.09. Other winners from the 400m finals were James Chinn (M45-51.73), Bill Collins (M50-54.20), Charles Allie (M55-54.53), Larry Barnum (M60-58.43), Bob Lida (M65-1:00.63), Lloyd Williams (M70-1:06.60), Earl Fee (M75-1:11.45) and Raoul Rodriques (M80-1:25.19). Kelli Wensel (W30-1:02.52), Lori Schutt (W35-1:03.67), Lesia Batiste (W40-1:00.01), Stephanie Vega (W45-1:03.48),

The winners from the 5,000m race walk were Maryanne Daniel (W45-26:37.68), Lynn Tracy (W50-26:53.97), Kathy Frable (W55-31:11.61), Jolene Steigerwalt (W60-31:48.49), Claire Elkins (W70-40:50.76) and Kate Marrs (W75-35:15.33). The men's 5,000m race walk winners were Alberto Medina (M40-27:27.60), Mark Green (M45-23:01.50), David Ciccone (M50-24:13.40), Michael Wiggins (M55-24:45.30), Donald DeNoon (M60-25:53.66), Paul Johnson (M65-27:36.43) and Jack Starr (M75-32:09.44).

Tim Walters of Washington, Ohio leaped 5.48m/17-11.75 to win the M50 long jump and barely edge Bill Murray of Birmingham, Ala., who finished second with a mark of 5:34m/17-6.25.

Other long jump winners were Corwin Jackson (M30-6.09m/19-11.75), Antonio Palacios (M35-6.97m/22-10-.50), Brian Coushay (M40-6.37m/20-10.75), Bryan Johnson and Peter Houba tied for first (M45-6.08m/19-11.50), Roger Parnell (M55-5.53m/18-1.75), Ted Kalaidi (M60-5.12m/16-9.75), Emil Pawlik (M65-4.79m15-8.50w), Robert Hewitt (M70-4.44m/14-6.75w), Paul Bambrook (M75-4.10m/13-5.25) and Leland McPhie (M90-2.01m/6-7). The women's long jump winners were Regina Richardson (W35-5.32m/17-5.50), Veronica Amarasekara (W5.45m/17-10.50), Donna Pope-Green (W45-4.56m/14-11.50), Anna Wlodarczyk (W50-4.91m/16-1.25), Petra Zorner (W55-4.12m/13-6.25), Kathy Jager (W60-3.18m/10-5.25), Barbara Jordan (W65-3.42m/11-2.50), and Johnnye Valien (W75-2.80m/9-2.25).

In the 80m hurdles, the winners include Joy Upshaw-Margeru (W40-12.28), Joanne Perkins (W45-16.64), Anna Wlodarczyk (W50-13.46) and Rhona Trott (W55-17.34). The men's winners were James Stookey (M70-13.41) and Denver Smith (M75-15.77).

The 2004 100m hurdles champions were Justine Brummel (W30-17.13) and Lisa Marie Render (W35-21.83). The 100m hurdles winners were Tim Walters (M50-14.92), Roger Parnell (M55-15.60) and Emil Pawlik (M65-16.76). The men's 110m hurdles champions were Antoine Bryant (M30-15.62), Don Drummond (M35-14.41), David Ashford (M40-13.90) and Ken Ellis (M45-16.51).

Chris Yorges of Eugene, Ore., continued his dominance in the 3,000m steeplechase after he claimed his ninth consecutive master's title. The 38-year-old ran 10:02.10 to win the M35 age group. Other 3,000m SC winners were Timo Mostert (M40-10:34.30), Keith Cooper (M45-11:23.00), Bob Campbell (M50-11:32.90), John Pickard of Canada (M55-12:29.50) and Ronald Pate of Hawaii (M55-12:43.20).

Karen Steen of Olympia, Wash., ran the fastest time of 7:11.97 by any woman in the 2,000m steeplechase in winning the W40 age group. Other winners in the 2,000m steeplechase were Nicole Lycan (W30-7:51.83), Lisa Marie Render (W35-10:06.71), Dee Ann Dougherty (W45-8:23.98), Mary Rosado (W50-10:38.33), Hillen Stubendorff (W55-9:19.44) and Gloria Bortell (W70-17:51.50). The men's steeplechase winners were Vern Christensen (M60-8:27.43), Joe Cordero (M65-8:29.87), Geza Feld (M70-9:50.17), Glenn Bradd (M80-14:10.40) and Daniel Bulkley (M85-14:28.93).

Matti Kilpelainen of Canton, Mich., cleared 3.80m/12-5.50 to win a close competition in the men's M55 pole vault. Runner-up Dick Kochert cleared 3.50m/11-5.75 followed by Warren Wilke in third-place with a mark of 3.35m/10-11.75. The men's M65 age group was even closer as Terry Cannon of San Diego, Calif., cleared 3.20m/10-6 as Gerald Counihan of New York City cleared the same height to finish second followed by Taylor Goode of Newport News Va., in third-place with a mark of 3.00m/9-10. Other pole vault winners were Jeff Kingstad (M50-3.95m/12-11.50) and Ron Colliver (M60-3.00m/9-10).

Gerald Vaughn of Charlotte, N.C., threw 13.73m/45-0.50 to win the M65 shot put 5K. The 68-year-old, Vaughn edged 66-year-old runner-up Richard Cochran who tossed 13.37m/43-10.50. Other winners in the men's shot put 5K were Tom Gage (M60-14.82m/48-7.50).

The men's high jump winners were Oleg Mysikov (M35-1.82m/5-11.50), John Hoyt (M40-1.92m/6-3.50) and Bruce McBarnette (M45-1.92m/6-3.50).

Winners from the women's discus throw were Jacqueline Nasca (W30-36.95m/121-2), Rose Fritzinger (W35-30.70m/100-9), Oneithea Lewis (W40-41.50m/136-2), Carol Finsrud (W45-47.95m/157-3), Linda Rowe (W50-29.97m/98-4) and Mary Hartzler (W55-28.79m/94-5). The winners from the men's include William Summers (M30-49.44m/162-2), Mark Collier (M35-53.98m/177-1), Joseph Beadle (M40-48.08m/157-9) and Warren Taylor (M45-45.26m/148-6).

Hammer throw champions are as follows, Carl Reichard (M50-44.21m/145-0) and Todd Taylor (M55-50.63m/166-1).

Other javelin throw winners include Marg Radcliffe (W60-29.93m/98-2), Gloria Bortell (W70-21.53m/70-7.75), Johnnye Valien (W75-17.05m/55-11.25) and Olga Kotelko (W85-15.70m/51-6.25). The men's winners were William Garraham (M75-33.44m/109-8), Bill Carter (M80-24.62m/80-9.25), David Schlothauer (M85-11.30m/37-1) and Leland McPhie (M90-13.03m/42-9).
