Athletics: Meiler named USATF Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS - Flo Meiler has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after setting a world masters record in the women's 300m hurdles Sunday to conclude the 37th USA Masters Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois.

Meiler of Shelburne, Vt., ran 1 minute, 7.16 seconds to set a world W70 record in the 300m hurdles (27 inch). The 70-year-old bettered the previous record of 1:08.82 by Isabel Hofmeyr. No stranger to record-breaking, Meiler on July 24, set a world W70 age group record after she ran 1:08.35 in the 300m hurdles (30 inch) at the Eastern Masters Championships in Springfield, Mass.

Meiler who competed in 15 events at USA Masters also scored the most points by any woman in the women's pentathlon (3,996) on August 5 to highlight the first day of competition.

Other world records from USA Masters included, Bud Held of Del Mar, Calif., who cleared 2.96 meters/9 feet, 8.50 inches to set a M75 record in the pole vault. The 76-year-old Held bettered the 2.95m/8.00 set in 1997 by 75-year-old at the time, William Bell of Jonesboro, Ark. The 82-year-old Bell maintained his name in the masters pole vault record book with his clearance of 2.60m/8-6.25 to better the world M80 pole vault record of 2.51m/8-2.75 set in 1992 by American Carol Johnston. Audry Lary of Frederick, Md., leaped 8.09m/26-6.50 to set a world W70 record in the women's triple jump. The 70-year-old bettered the previous record of 7.87m/25-10 set in 1999 by Shirley Peterson of New Zealand.

Now in its fourth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
