Athletics: AC names 2004 Combined Events Team

(Ottawa, August 13, 2004) – Athletics Canada is pleased to announce the athletes who will represent Canada at the 2004 International Meeting of Combined Events. The competition will take place in Apeldoorn, Netherlands on August 28th and 29th, 2004 and is a dual meet between Canada and the Netherlands.

The combined events include the decathlon and the heptathlon. The ten events of the decathlon are: 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400m, 110m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1500m. The seven events of the heptathlon are: 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, javelin throw and 800m. Competitors earn points depending on their results in each event and their total points determine their final ranking.

“This team consists some of Canada's most talented senior combined event athletes, along with a great talent pool of junior decathletes. Our senior athletes all had a great competition at our National Championships in Victoria with most of them setting personal best scores,” said head coach Carla Nicholls. “We are setting our sights quite high for these athletes and expect them to do very well.

“This trip to the Netherlands is such a great opportunity for our National Combined Events program. It offers superb experience and aids in development for our junior team. This is one of the only national teams to send juniors and seniors together in one trip. This offers the junior athletes a great opportunity to learn from the experience of senior athletes. As well, it allows our senior athletes a very competitive, international experience which is important to further develop their talent.”
