Athletics: The Leatherneck Express Rides into Marine Corps Marathon History

Marine Corps Themed 1937 Panel Truck to Lead Marathon

QUANTICO, Va. - (August 20, 2004) - Look for a 67-year-old to lead the 29th Marine Corps Marathon (MCM). The Leatherneck Express, a fully restored a 1937 panel truck complete with U.S. Marine Corps graphics and a stadium style sound system, will be among the lead vehicles guiding the runners through the course as it winds through Arlington and Washington, D.C. on Sunday, October 31.

Military history buff and classic car restorer Tom Torget, 57 of Kerrville, TX, has created a classic Marine recruiting vehicle that draws as much attention, visibility and awe as the 'Hummers' and other of today's vehicles. "I thought of what might have been done during WWII to inspire youth to consider joining the Corps," said Torget.

The Leatherneck Express boasts colors, artwork and a speaker system that blares inspirational and patriotic music to charge spectators. Torget, who served six years in the Marine Corps Reserves, initiated this project at his own expense and completed the two-year task in the spring of 2004. The Leatherneck Express has received "fan mail" from Vice President Cheney, as well the Commandant of the Marine Corps.

"The MCM is always looking to add extra elements of excitement," said Rick Nealis, Marine Corps Marathon Race Director. "The Leatherneck Express will be ahead of the pack on race day alerting spectators along the course that the lead runners are soon to follow." The Leatherneck Express will also appear at the MCM Healthy Kids Fun Run on Saturday, October 30 at the Iwo Jima Monument. The USMC recruiting HMMWV (Hummer) will be on display at the entrance of the Hyatt Regency Crystal City during the 2004 MCM Runners' Expo presented by Caremark from October 28-30 and at the MCM Finish Festival tent on race day.

The Marine Corps Marathon continues a combined tradition of dedication, sportsmanship and patriotism. Since its inception, over 293,000 civilian and military runners from all walks of life have participated, deservingly earning the event its nickname "The People's Marathon." The Marine Corps Marathon also hosts The Washington Post presents: The Healthy Kids Fun Run on Saturday, October 30 and the Marine Corps Marathon 8K on Sunday, October 31, immediately following the start of the Marathon.
