Athletics: Friday Olympic USA track & field preview

ATHENS –Relay festivities kick into high gear Friday at Olympic Stadium, while several key individual events also have finals.

Team USA 50 km race walkers Curt Clausen (Chula Vista, Calif.) and Philip Dunn (San Diego, Calif.) open the day’s competition at 7 a.m. Evening competition includes Tim Mack (Knoxville, Tenn.), Derek Miles (Jonesboro, Ark.) and Toby Stevenson (Chula Vista, Calif.) in the men’s pole vault final.

Marion Jones (Cary, N.C.) and Grace Upshaw (Menlo Park, Calif.) pursue medals in the women’s long jump; WHO is in the men’s 110m hurdle final; and Team USA’s Elva Dryer (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Katie O’Neill (New Haven, Ct.) compete in the women’s 10,000 meters.

The men’s 4x100 and 4x400 relays and women’s 4x400 all have semifinal rounds. The women’s 4x100m relay final provides the finale for the evening session as the Olympic track & field program nears its conclusion.

7 a.m. – Men’s 50K Race Walk Final (Olympic Stadium) – Curt Clausen, Chula Vista, Calif.; Philip Dunn, San Diego, Calif.

8 p.m. – Men’s Pole Vault Final (Olympic Stadium) – Tim Mack, Knoxville, Tenn.; Derek Miles, Jonesboro, Ark.; Toby Stevenson, Chula Vista, Calif.

8:05 p.m. – Women’s Long Jump Final (Olympic Stadium) – Marion Jones, Cary, N.C.; Grace Upshaw, Menlo Park, Calif..

8:19 p.m. – Men’s 4x100 Relay Round 1 Heat 2 (Olympic Stadium) - Lane 6: U.S. John Capel (Gainesville, Fla.), Darvis Patton (Fort Worth, Texas), Coby Miller (Pasadena, Calif.), Maurice Greene (Granada Hills, Calif.)

8:4 p.m. – Women’s 4x400 Relay Round 1 Heat 2 (Olympic Stadium) - Lane 1: U.S. Relay pool: Monique Hennagan (Stockbridge, Calif.), Sanya Richards (Austin, Texas), Dee Dee Trotter (Knoxville, Tenn.), Monique Henderson (Los Angeles), Crystal Cox (Chapel Hill, N.C.), Moushaumi Robinson (Cary, N.C.)

9:09 p.m. – Men’s 4x400 Relay Round 1 Heat 2 (Olympic Stadium) - Lane 6: U.S. Kelly Willie (Baton Rouge, La.), Derrick Brew (Raleigh, N.C.), Andrew Rock (LaCrosse, Wis.), Darold Williamson (Waco, Texas)

9:30 p.m. – Men’s 110 Hurdles Final (Olympic Stadium) – Duane Ross, Garner, N.C.; Terrence Trammell (Ellenwood, Ga.)

9:50 p.m. – Women’s 10,000 Final (Olympic Stadium) – Elva Dryer, Albuquerque, N.M.; Katie O’Neill, New Haven, Conn.

9:45 p.m. – Women’s 4x100 Relay Final (Olympic Stadium) – Angela Williams, Ontario, Calif.; Marion Jones (Cary, N.C.); Lauryn Williams (Miami, Fla.); LaTasha Colander (Garner, N.C.)
