Athletics: Hayes named USATF Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS - Joanna Hayes has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after her win Sunday at the 2004 "Russian Challenge" in Moscow.

Hayes ran 12.78 seconds to win the women's 100m hurdles on Sunday, with Russia's Mariya Koroteeva the runner-up in 12.86. Last month at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens Hayes became just the second American 100m hurdles gold medalist in history, winning in an Olympic record and personal-best time of 12.37 seconds.

Now in its fourth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
