Triathlon: Canadian Elite Triathlon Championships in Montreal

Montréal Festival du Triathlon 2004 to Hold Canadian National Elite Triathlon Championships

Toronto, Ontario - September 9,2004:

Triathlon Canada is officially announcing that the Montréal Festival du Triathlon 2004 will host the National Elite Triathlon Championships on Saturday, September 18. These championships were to be held in Kelowna, British Columbia on August 22. However, torrential rains and thunder storms led to flooding on the bike and run courses forcing the cancellation of that race.

A number of alternative sites were considered, however, the Montreal Festival du Triathlon had the infrastructure to hold this race on short notice. This decision was very difficult and complex. Triathlon Canada’s Executive Committee had to consult with athletes, funding partners, race directors, technical delegates and many other stakeholders to weigh the benefits and risks of holding this event. The decision process was further complicated by the fact that many key Triathlon Canada decision-makers were in Athens until last week. In the end it was determined that Triathlon Canada should hold a National Championship in 2004 in the best interest of the athletes and the sport at large.

Following is the schedule of events surrounding the Elite races:

Friday, September 17
1pm to 3pm – All race course areas are open for training
3pm – News Conference for the Elite Race
Immediately following the news conference – Elite Athlete Briefing

Saturday, September 18
3:15pm – Elite Women’s Start (Elite, Under-23, University)
4:30pm – Elite Men’s Start (Elite, Under-23, University)
