Posted: September 10, 2004 Triathlon: Campbell and Johnson Win Mitsubishi Electric Dublin City Triathlon
Over 400 people took part in the Mitsubishi Electric Dublin City Triathlon today Saturday, September 11th. This was the biggest ever Dublin City Triathlon and saw people taking part from most counties in Ireland as well as teams from San Francisco, London and Glasgow. The race started in the Liffey, an easy 1500m in calm conditions (before the hooter sounded). First out of the water was Irish Elite International Brian Campbell in 19.09 mins. No surprise here as Campbell,28 from Larne, living in Befast, who is the current Irish Triathlon Champion was a former Junior National Swimming Champion. All athletes then then a 5 laps of the Phoenix Park, 40Km in all before heading out for the 10Km run. After a good bike leg Campbell was unstoppable on the run, doing the 10k in 34.10 mins. He came home in first place in a time of 1.57.38.
He was followed home by fellow Elite Trevor Woods, from Omagh but living in Cork. Woods finished in 2.01.48. The third spot on the podium went to Brian Crinion from Dublin, who for years could not race in this event as his club, Belpark were the organisers but since Tsunami Tri took it over this year it gave him an opportunity to race on his old training grounds. Crinion came home in 2.03.31 after overtaking fellow Dubliner Mark Riesley on the bike leg. The womens event was won by Christine Johnson, 30 from Essex, UK. Johnson is also an Irish International and like Campbell is also the current Irish Triathlon Champion. Christine had a great swim, coming out of the water in 20.29 mins. She was uncatchable on the bike and run and finished in a time of 2.15.11. Julie Murphy, 28, from Belfast was second home in 2.17.51 with local girl Jenny Fay, 28, from Dublin in third in 2.24.00. Before the main event, a Try-a-triathlon was held, a mini version of the normal Olympic distance. Over 100 complete beginners took part in their first ever triathlon, the majority of whom have been bitten by the 'Triathlon bug' and vow to do the full one next year. The race was held on closed roads in the Phoenix Park, Tsunami Tri, who are the biggest triathlon club in Ireland did a very professional job in making sure the whole event ran smoothly. A bar-b-q and party were held afterwards in the Garda boat club and the rain held off until after the prize-giving cermony. Brian Campbell and Christine Johnson are pictured below Official photos from the event will be available on www.asiphoto.com in the coming days, each participant will be able to choose from a gallery of shots.
