Posted: September 10, 2004 Athletics: Mack, Hayes to compete in Berlin 2004 Olympic gold medalists Tim Mack and Joanna Hayes will compete Sunday at the IAAF Golden League meet in Berlin. Mack won the Olympic pole vault title with a clearance of 5.95 meters /19 feet, 6.25 inches on his third attempt, which established his lifetime best and an Olympic record. Mack defeated fellow U.S. vaulter Toby Stevenson, who settled for the silver medal with a best of 5.90m/19-4.25. Stevenson will look to makeup for his Athens defeat on Sunday. Hayes had the race of her life in Athens in posting a personal best and Olympic record of 12.37 seconds in the final to secure the women's 100m hurdles gold medal. On Sunday Hayes will battle her fellow Athens medalists Olena Krasovska of Ukraine (silver) and U.S. teammate Melissa Morrison (bronze) on the brand new eye-catching blue track surface at Berlin's historic 1936 Olympic Stadium. Five-time Olympic medalist Marion Jones has pulled out of the meet due to back pain. Jones, who was to compete in the women's long jump in Berlin, will not compete again this year. From USATF.org.
