Athletics: 73 Year-old Ed Whitlock Runs 2:54:48 at Toronto Marathon

Ed Whitlock at the 2003 Toronto Waterfront Marathon

Toronto, ON September 26, 2004:

Milton's Ed Whitlock smashed his 70+ age-group marathon record with a scintillating 2:54:48 performance at this morning's Toronto Waterfront Marathon.

Whitlock, who is the only 70 year-old to ever break three hours for the marathon distance ran 2:59:10 last year on the same course.

Under ideal race condiditons, Whitlock ran a negative split as he went through 21K in 1:27:30.

On September 12th he ran a new world best of 37:33 for 10K at the Toronto Island 10K Run.

Today's marathon was won by Danny Kassap of Toronto in a time of 2:14:50.0. The top woman was Lioudmila Kortchaguina in 2:36:31.
