Posted: October 4, 2004 Duathlon: McGlone wins Duathlon Championships – her 2nd 2004 National Championship
2004-10-03 -- Quebec, Quebec Samantha McGlone and Kyle Marcotte have won the October 2 Canadian Duathlon Championships in Quebec. McGlone’s win follows the National Triathlon title she claimed last month – making her the 2004 National Triathlon and Duathlon Champion. Athletes from Quebec dominated the women’s event – claiming the top three positions. The elite and U23 athletes raced together and Montreal’s McGlone led the field from the start of the race. Into the first transition McGlone was followed by Quebec athletes Annie Gervais and Veronique Fortin. By the second transition McGlone had a three minute lead over Gervais who had maintained her second place position. Quebec’s Isabelle Gagnon rounded out the podium finishing third overall. Nicole Van Beurden was the winner in the women’s U23 category, she finished 4th place overall among the entire women’s field. Magali Tisseyre was the second place women U23, finishing 9th overall. In the men’s event Calgary’s Kyle Marcotte claimed the 2004 Duathlon title. Toronto’s Chris Van Beurden, still in the U23 category, was second overall and was followed by Victoria’s Adam Campbell. The second and third place U23 athletes were Jacques Marcoux of Winnipeg and Victor Alexy of St-Elite d’Or repectively. Miguel Sanches was the third place elite athlete. The men’s race was close throughout – a pack of seven athletes came into the first transition together following the10 k run. Following the 40 km bike Miguel Sanches had the lead by a few seconds but was closely followed by a large pack. Marcotte proved the fastest through the 5 km run to the finish.
