Athletics: Ottawa CIBC Run for the Cure Raises Over $800,000

The following article is from Phil Marsh of the Ottawa Running Room, an organizer of the Ottawa CIBC Run for the Cure:

Thanks everyone for making the CIBC Run for the Cure a tremendous success once again. The Ottawa event had over 10,000 participants and we have so far raised over $830,000 for breast cancer research! I know many of you were out on the course either walking, running or cheering friends and family on a day that is both a day of rememberance and of celebration. Your support either by participating or as volunteers was truly appreciated especially by those whose lives have been affected by this terrible disease.

This Saturday, October 09, the 14th Beat Beethoven will once again be taking place at City Hall starting with the 8km chip timed event (with l/s souvenir shirt) at 10:30 and the 4km fun run and walk (s/s shirt) at 10:40. This event is available online until tomorrow at midnight at runningRoom.com and you can also register and pick up your shirt and race kits at our 160 Slater Running Room on Friday from 12-6PM or race morning in front of City Hall starting at 9am. There is also no increase or late fee for the event this year, as we want to maintain the pricing of this great event and try to make it as easy to make food or clothing donations as possible! BobFM will be on site with music and we have some great food, including PowerBars for everyone and some great prizes. There are medals for the winners of each age group and we have arranged for mild temperatures this year as you try and beat Beethoven's 5th Symphony!

Once again, the event is held to support the Shepherd's of Good Hope. This organization is especially important now with a record amount of people having no food or shelter as we approach a weekend that we all have much to be thankful for, including our health and our friends and families. We will be accepting donations of food and clothing at all of the Running Room locations, at Slater on Friday and on race day the Shepherds will have a truck there for your contributions.
Thanks again for your support of these events, by the end of 2004, we will be close to hitting $2,000,000 for local charities through the events that we are sponsoring and it is through all of your support of these events that we can make such a difference in our community.
See you Saturday, have a great week and enjoy the return to summer (sorry skiers!).
