Athletics: Sunday's Denver Marathon Postponed

The following is from the Denver Maarthon website:

We regretfully inform you that the 2004 Denver Marathon & Half Marathon has been POSTPONED until further notice. Unfortunately, this last minute postponement is out of our control. Despite our close working relationship with the City of Denver over the past five years, we have been unable to arrive at an agreement allowing for the permitting of this event for this Sunday. Our hope is to be able to announce a new date by the middle of next week.

Like you, we are runners and have represented your interests to the best of our ability to make this race happen for the 5th consecutive year. We are very, very sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you. We, too, are extremely disappointed. Your patience and understanding is greatly appreciated.

Once the new date is established, we will send out an e-mail to all participants and post to the website at www.denvermarathon.com.

The Rocky Mountain News reported that "Authorities decided Friday to cancel Sunday's Denver Marathon after they said organizers did not raise the money to pay more than 100 off-duty police officers to set up street barricades."
