Posted: October 19, 2004 Athletics: Dalton, Martin defend US Masters cross country titles Thomas Dalton of Schenectady, N.Y., and Kathryn Martin of Northport, N.Y., notched the top age graded performances Sunday in successfully defending their national titles at the 2004 USA Masters 5 km Cross Country Championships in Saratoga, N.Y. Dalton (46) ran 15 minutes, 12 seconds to win the men's 45-49 title, and Martin (53) won the women's 50-54 title in 18:23. Brian Pope (41) of Oxford, Miss., had the fastest time of the day on the men's side in winning the 40-44 title in 14:54, and Marisa Hanson (41) of Pleasant Valley, N.Y., ran 17:47 for the fastest time of the day for the women to win the 40-44 title. Other national champions crowned for the men were: James Robinson (50-54) from Rochester, N.Y. in 16:49; Roger Price (55-59), from Piscataway, N.J., in 17:02; Bill Borla (60-64) from Torrington, Conn., in 18:14; Thom Weddle (60-64) from Minneapolis, Minn., in 19:50; Bill Butler (70-74) from West Chester, Penn., in 23:01; Bill Fortune (75-79) from Pearl River, N.Y., in 23:58; Sab Kiobe (80-84) from Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., in 29:26 and Danforth Geer (85-89) from Bennington, Vermont, in 42:49. Other national champions crowned for the women were: Patricia Ford (45-49) from Lafayette, N.Y., in 19:27; Carol Kane (55-59) from Weston, Conn., in 22:57; Eileen Holzman (60-64) from Airmont, N.Y., in 24:36; Carrie Parsi (65-69) from Gloucester, Mass., in 23:33; Anny Stockman (70-74) from Rensselaer, N.Y., in 27:12 and Doris Schlamowitz (75-79) from Albany, N.Y., in 33:25. Men's Team champions were: Team Runners High (Southern California) - M40; Adirondack AC (Adirondack) - M50; Moose Milers and Marathoners (New England) - M60; and Finger Lakes Running Club (Niagara) - M70. Women's Team champions were: Genesee Valley Harriers (Niagara) - W40; Finger Lakes Running Club (Niagara) - W50; and Liberty AC (New England) - W60. NCAA cross country weekend wrap-up NCAA Pre-Nationals at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Ind. Stanford's Alicia Craig won the "Blue" race by three seconds to lead the Cardinal to an easy team win in the women's 6km race Saturday. Notre Dame, led by Molly Huddle's third-place finish, took second in the team standings. In the "White" race, Colorado's Renee Metivier was the individual champ, crossing the line more than 13 seconds ahead of the runner-up. Her team also topped the victory podium with a 94-109 win over Michigan. Matt Gonzales of New Mexico outlegged Colorado's Brent Vaughn for the "Blue" men's 8km title, but the Buffs took the team win easily, 63-165 over Cal Poly-SLO. Stanford won the "White" team race behind individual victor Ryan Hall. Chile Pepper Festival at Fayetteville, Arkansas Host Arkansas romped to the men's title with 33 points, led by Josphat Boit. SMU took top honors in the women's race, edging Arkansas 67-76. Penn State National Invitational Providence scored 49 points, including a 1-2 finish by Olympian Kim Smith and Marry Cullen, to down Duke (60) in the women's race. The Nittany Lions's Dan Mazzocco was the individual champ in the men's race, but American University won the team title 49-83 over Penn. McDougal Wins 5th Straight Liberty University freshman Josh McDougal continued his unbeaten run this season with a course-record 23:40.2 foreight kilometers at the North Carolina Collegiate Championships in Greenville.
