Posted: November 1, 2004 Triathlon: Four Canadians In Top Ten at Cancun World Cup
2004-10-31 -- Cancun, Mexico Photo - Tara Ross (CAN) follows Anja Dittmer (GER) out of transition The morning was slightly overcast in Cancun, making the race conditions ideal in Mexico for the strong field that took to the start line. The October 31st Cancun ITU World Cup saw Montreal's Samantha McGlone finish 4th overall; Vancouver's Carol Montgomery 7th; Penticton's Jill Savege 9th and Vancouver's Tara Ross 10th - making Cancun one of Canada's strongest showings in a World Cup event this year Anja Dittmer (GER) current World Cup rankings leader, and winner of the 2004 Hamburg and Hungary World Cup's held back throughout the race but sprinted on the final lap of the run to claim the World Cup title in a time of 2:05:51. American Joanna Zeiger finished just behind in 2:06:07 and Brazil's Sandra Soldan rounded out the podium in 2:06:24. Montreal's Samantha McGlone, continuing her best race season to date and posting the fastest run split of the day - just missed the podium, finishing in a time of 2:06:35. Carol Montgomery started the event with a strong swim and bike but wasn't able to put hold her pace throughoput the run and finished 7th in a time of 2:07:22. Not far behind, Jill Savege crossed in a time of 2:07:54 and Tara Ross claimed her first ever top ten World Cup place with a time of 2:07:57. Canadians Carolyn Murray, Ayesha Rollinson and Christine Jeffries also put in solid preformances finishing 18th, 19th and 20th respectively against the competitive World Cup field. In the men's event France's Cedric Fleuriton claimed the Cancun World Cup title, 2nd place went to American Hunter Kemper and 3rd to Great Britain's Tim Don. Comment on this story. |
