Posted: November 2, 2004 Athletics: Bailey named USATF Athlete of the Week INDIANAPOLIS - Mary Kate Bailey has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after winning the 2004 Marine Corps Marathon overall women's race Sunday in Washington, D.C. A Naval Academy graduate, Bailey finished in 2 hours, 48 minutes, 31 seconds which bettered her personal best by 14 minutes. The 29-year-old Bailey became the first active duty Marine to win the Marine Corps Marathon women's race since Joanna Martin in 1979. A resident of Arlington, Va., Bailey, who runs for the Marine Corps Team, hopes to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Trials. Now in its fourth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week. From: USATF.org.
