Posted: November 13, 2004 Multisport: Jay T. Kearney Speaks At UK Sport Conference Speech On Periodization Of Nutrition Hits Big With Coaches Colorado Springs, CO - Dr. Jay T. Kearney attended the UK Sport Conference this week. Among those attending were the top coaching figures in Olympics, Paralympics and professional sport. Dr. Kearney attended the conference in a professional and educational capacity - he made five presentations on the Periodization of Nutrition. He compared Periodization of Nutrition to the Nutrient Timing System, which matches specific nutrients and timing of their intake around a single training session. The concept was reported to resonate well with his audiences. It inspired much interest and dialogue among coaches attending the conference. The subject of Periodization in Nutrition is gaining significance in the world of sports science as athletes and coaches realize the integral role of nutrition in an athlete’s performance. Much of Dr. Kearney’s presentation referred to the subjects covered in the National Best Seller Chris Carmichael’s Food for Fitness. Food for Fitness explains in detail the proper intake of carbohydrate, protein and fat (percentages) in a periodized nutrition schedule. What’s perhaps even more significant to readers is when Carmichael explains the roles of each of the major food groups, vitamins and minerals in one’s performance. Food for Fitness has successfully brought the topic of sports science and nutrition to the mainstream public in an approachable and interesting way. At Carmichael Training Systems, Dr. Kearney leads research and development for new health products, creating formulas for functional foods that support the periodization approach to nutrition. He has an impressive background in sport science having served on the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) as Director of Sports Services and Technology. His activities at USOC were centered on research and development geared to maximize an Olympic athlete’s performance and sustained competitive advantage. Periodization of Nutrition is a concept that helps to promote longevity in athletic performance. Dr. Kearney and CTS’s recent focus on the subject seemed to resound throughout the conference. Keynote speaker Michael Johnson, five-time Gold Olympic Medalist, spoke on the issue of sustained competitive advantage in the sport of track and field. He explained, “Consistency is what defines the great athletes - they’re not the ones who had one of two great years, they’re the ones that you saw deliver time and time and time again.” Dr. Kearney’s presentation on nutrition continues to influence the focus of those in the Sports Science and Technology fields. Dr. Kearney will return this Monday, November 15th to Colorado Springs where he continues research on physiology related to nutrition. Founded by former Olympian, US Olympic Committee Coach of the Year, and bestselling author, Chris Carmichael in 1999, Carmichael Training Systems (CTS) is a community of athletes and coaches dedicated to improving the lives of active individuals though enhanced fitness and nutrition coaching programs.
