Athletics: Mondor: "It Is A Very Hard Race On The Body"

Despite a foot injury, Emilie Mondor came to Manchester, Conn., on Tuesday to defend her Manchester Road Race title. She knew she wasn't 100%, but thought as race champion, she should start.

"I worked very hard all week healing it as fast as i could for the Manchester Road Race," Mondor wrote in an e-mail message to RRW. "I could have scratch[ed] like the 20 elites athletes (flanagan, webb...) who did it but I give it a try in MRR."

She didn't get very far. "I went easy leading Smith and Rudolph for the first two miles on a pace that would have been way faster then their final time (probably what I did last year), but it is a very hard race on the body and even as I HATE stopping I have to convince myself it was very smart because tonight I am not more injured."

Mondor said that it was unlikely that she would start next weekend's Canadian Cross Country Championships, and would focus on healing up so that she could be ready for big competitions next year, like the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in March. She does plan to return to Manchester again.

"I will be there for the next 10 years to break my record!"
