Posted: November 30, 2004 Athletics: Service for Victor Matthews on Friday, December 3rd
Victor Matthews, BA, Dip.Ed, MA, Phd, a professor of classics at University of Guelph, died Sunday night at home, in Guelph, Ontario. He was a longtime coach of the University of Guelph track and cross country team, and had been coach to thousands of others. Even late in his running career, Vic put in some noteable performances as a masters runner, including a 2:36 marathon in Ottawa (age 40), and an indoor 5000 metres of 15:55 the same year. See photos (below) by George Aitkin. There will be a service held at Gilchrist Chapel, 1 Delhi St. Guelph (www.gilchristchapel.com ) on Friday Dec. 3 at 11:30 am. If you have memories, tributes, photos, we are building a web page to honour Victor www.tentofmiracles.ca/victor.
